The Art of Compounding Medication

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioner’s prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.

How is quality assured?

We take quality assurance very seriously. Staff members are trained under the supervision of licensed pharmacists in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements by the compounding pharmacist. There are multiple quality control checkpoints for each prescription. We send samples to independent labs to ensure potency of medication. We follow applicable USP standards and state and federal regulatory requirements governing compounding pharmacies.

How long does it take to get a compound prescription?

Compounding is a specialty practice and it will require a little more time to prepare compared to traditional prescriptions. It also differs from prescription to prescription. Our staff will let you know the process of picking up your compounded medication and when you can expect it to be ready.

How is compounding different from pharmaceutical manufacturing?

Compounding is different because it can be customized to the patient. We believe not one size fits all. Compounding can customize dosage amounts, ingredients in the case of allergies, and delivery method, even flavors can be added. This customizes it directly for the patient, making it easier to take the medication.

How do I get a compound medication?

Compounded medications are prepared only pursuant to a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. If you believe a compounded medication may be appropriate, please discuss this with your provider. Upon receipt of a valid prescription, our pharmacy will prepare the medication as directed.

Why would I need a compounded medication?

There are many reasons someone would find compounded medications a better option from traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing such as:

- When the strength/dosage form not commercially available; ingredient sensitivities; alternative dosage forms to support adherence
- If you have an ingredient sensitivity or allergy
